Web Development Roadmap

Before writing code, learn what actually happens when you visit a page: browsers request files from servers over HTTP, and HTML, CSS and JavaScript are just those files. An afternoon spent on this mental model prevents months of confusion about "where code runs."

HTML defines what things are — headings, paragraphs, links, forms. Focus on semantic elements rather than memorizing all tags; screen readers and search engines both read your structure. Build real pages from the first day.

Most CSS frustration is layout frustration. Learn the box model, then Flexbox, then Grid — in that order — and style a page you wrote yourself. Colors and animations are easy once positioning stops fighting you.

Variables, functions, conditionals, loops, arrays and objects. Practice in the browser console where feedback is instant. You are not trying to master the language yet — just to make pages respond when a user clicks something.

Right-click → Inspect is the single most used tool in a web developer's day. Learn the Elements panel to debug layout and the Console to debug JavaScript. Inspecting sites you admire is also the fastest way to learn how they are built.

A multi-page site about anything you care about, live on the internet on free static hosting. Publishing early makes everything after this feel real — and teaches you files, paths and deployment while your project is still small enough to understand completely.

Learn to select elements, react to events, and update the page from code. This is the core loop of all front-end work — every framework you meet later is an abstraction over exactly this.

Promises, async/await, and fetch. Build something that loads live data — weather, prices, anything with a free API. Understanding "the data arrives later" separates people who copy tutorials from people who can build.

Commit, branch, merge, push. Use it for everything from now on, even solo projects — the habit matters more than advanced commands, and every employer and collaborator will assume it.

Most traffic is mobile, so build mobile-first with media queries and flexible layouts. Accessibility (contrast, keyboard navigation, alt text) is easiest learned now, while your habits are still forming — retrofitting it later is far harder.

Combine everything: an app with real interactivity and live data, in a Git repository, deployed publicly. A to-do app with localStorage, a small game, a data dashboard — scope it small enough to finish.

Front-end: interfaces, interaction, visual problem-solving. Back-end: data, APIs, servers, logic. Full-stack exists, but learning one side properly first makes the other side far easier. Pick whichever made you more curious in stage 2.

React and Vue are the safest bets by ecosystem size; the concepts (components, state, props) transfer between all of them. One framework learned deeply beats three sampled — rebuild your stage 2 project in it as your first exercise.

Node.js keeps you in JavaScript, which is why most people start there. Build a REST API with persistent storage: SQL databases (PostgreSQL, SQLite) teach you concepts that outlast any technology choice.

Write tests for the code you already have — it changes how you design the next code you write. Debugging systematically (reproduce, isolate, fix, verify) instead of by trial-and-error is the biggest practical skill gap between juniors and seniors.

Package managers, bundlers, environment variables, deployment pipelines. You do not need to master the tools — you need to stop being intimidated by them. Setting up one project from scratch, without a starter template, gets you there.

Not tutorial clones — things a stranger could use, each finished and deployed. Three polished projects beat ten half-done ones. Solve a problem you actually have; genuine projects are self-documenting in interviews because you made every decision.

What it does, why it exists, how to run it, what you'd improve. Reviewers spend more time on your README than your code — and writing about your work clarifies what you actually learned.

Open source, a friend's project, anything with existing code and conventions. Reading a codebase you didn't write and making a change that fits is the daily reality of professional development — and the thing portfolios rarely prove.

The gap between "learning web development" and "being a web developer" closes through repetition, not more tutorials. Maintain your projects, rebuild old ones better, stay curious about how sites you use are made. This roadmap ends; the practice doesn't.
